Tryout Information (8/5/10)

LRST Tryout:  By appointment - email Head Coach Patrick Burda at: patrick.burda@lakewood.k12.oh.us

LRST is always looking for new swimmers!

Swimmers should be prepared to swim while the parents receive information on the program.

Interested swimmers should be able to swim one length of the pool (25 yards) front crawl and one length of the pool (25 yards) backstroke, and must be at least 6 years old.  LRST swimmers practice several times per week, and compete in meets held throughout the Greater Cleveland area.  The sport of swimming teaches youngsters discipline and helps them to become goal oriented.  The LRST coaches have extensive experience in helping younger swimmers to improve in a fun and upbeat atmosphere.   LRST features a great Parents Club who works tirelessly (through volunteers) to keep the sport fun, and the team a close knit group, through such activities and events such as: holiday party, pasta pump up dinner, team banquet, team breakfasts in the summer, and many other activities.

At the child's tryout, each swimmer will be evaluated by the coaching staff; this is done for safety purposes, and also to place each swimmer in the proper group.  Parents will be given fee information and will have the opprotunity to speak to parents with swimmers on the team.  For more information, please email Matt Demaline (Aquatic Manager) at matt.demaline@lakewood.k12.oh.us or Patrick Burda (Head Coach) at patrick.burda@lakewood.k12.oh.us

PATRICK BURDA - HEAD COACH (SILVER GROUP)

(patrick.burda@lakewood.k12.oh.us)

Patrick Burda joined the LRST coaching staff as Head Coach in May of 2008. Patrick joined the staff from the Solon Stars Swim Club, where he had been an assistant coach. During Patrick's swimming career, he had been a decorated swimmer for LRST.

Patrick had previously held the position of Head Coach with the Brooklyn Barracudas for 4 seasons. During that time, Patrick increased the number of swimmers participating in the program, as well as improving his team's final standings. Patrick led the team to its first league championship. Prior to his tenure as Head Coach, Patrick served as an assistant coach with the team for several years.

As an athlete, Patrick was a four year swimmer at Cleveland State University, helping them to the Horizon League Championship in 2006. Patrick's specialties included both distance freestyle and backstroke. He was prepared for this experience by his time as a swimmer in the LRST program for seven years, where he was a ten time Zone National Qualifier, and a three time LRST Most Valuable Swimmer.

Patrick currently resides in Brooklyn, and is continuing his studies at Cleveland State.

JIM STACY - SENIOR COACH (GOLD GROUP)

Jim Stacy began his swimming career at the University Circle YMCA with coach Pete Odell. When Coach Odell moved the team in 1957 Jim followed even though he still lived in East Cleveland. As a swimmer for Lakewood High School, he was an individual state runner up, part of a state championship team (1962) and multiple time all-American. After High School, he attended the University of Cincinnati where he was a multiple time conference champion, two-time Division I national qualifier (1965 & 1966), and Olympic trial qualifier (1964).

Jim began his coaching career as the Head Coach of LRSC in 1967, its second season. He gave up coaching from 1968 through 1972 to serve in the United States Navy. He rejoined the coaching ranks as the Head Coach of the Lakewood YMCA from 1974 to 1981. Jim then served as the Head Coach of the Berea Midpark Swim Club from 1982 through 1988. While at BMSC he was Lake Erie Swimming Coach of the Year (1983 & 1984) and developed multiple state and junior national qualifiers.  Jim returned to LRST for the second time in 1989 where he served as an assistant coach until 1993. He served as Head Coach of LRST from 1994 through 1998. As Head Coach of LRST he developed multiple Ohio high school state finalists and multiple junior national qualifiers. He also helped LRST swimmers achieve 8 National top 16 rankings, including several relays which ranked #1 in their USA swimming age group. Jim's coaching experience also includes coaching North Olmsted High School (1992-1997) and Padua Franciscan High School (2004-2008).  Recently, Jim was named the Head Coach at Lakewood High School for the 2008/2009 season.
